The ROVER 36 is being build by by my friend Karoly, near my own home, on a big island in the middle of the Danube. This means we have the opportunity to visit the site often, the privilege to help occasionally and the pleasure to eat all the lovely stuff they always dish out for us ;-) Building started in February 2006 and just as for my own YAGO 31, I will try to keep you up to date on the progress for the ROVER.

Building the ROVER 36

Here Aae some new pictures from this summer.

As for most of us, Karcsi also has to take the work when it presents itself, and at this moment he is again very busy and has no time for the boat. Still, he has advanced nicely. The hull is decked, a lot of it is welded, he has started the pilothouse and I hope he will have time to close the hull before the winter. The cabinsides / bulwarks are mostly fitted but yet uncut, which gives a bit ox a boxy look. That should disappear when the sides are trimmed to nice round curves. |

The work on the ROVER progresses in leaps and bounds, with fast furious bursts of activity every time Karcsi can spare a couple of days. So, not counting the interruptions, the hull so far with cabins almost finished represents less than 4 weeks full time work, for 2 people. After having joined the two half hulls, the boat sits upright on it's centerline and the transom is fitted. The next step then is to spread the open shell to its proper width and start fixing the sheer line by bringing up the foredeck. the Rover has quite a wide and rounded foredeck, Moterboat style, and this curve was not easy to pull in. After that, the beams for the fore and aft cabins are prepared and set up. Then the stringers are slotted into the beams to get ready for decking. Finally the short side decks are cut and tacked in. At this point the hull is stable in itself. The raised side-panels along cabin ad bulwarks will now be cut and adjusted on site and he is ready to add the pilothouse and start welding. Frames can be added everywhere now, but we still do some final adjustments vor layout variations there. (As for the flat nose: just as on my own rover, a rounded bow piece will be added.) |
